Damping Studies

VERIFICATION OF THE VIBRATION BEHAVIOUR OF THE BUNDLE/SPACER DAMPER SYSTEM - VIBRATION ANALYSIS
DAMP is equipped with state-of-the art computer programs for the vibration study of the transmission line; such programs allow to simulate the load on the conductors, which is due to the various kinds of conductor movements depending on the environmental parameters, such as temperature, wind speed or E.D.S.
Comparisons with vibration measurements carried out on real lines under severe windy conditions have demonstrated the full reliability of these programs.

Typical output of calculations of aeolian vibrations:
blue line = conductor strains without damping
fuchsia and green lines = conductor strains with damping

Typical output of calculations of sub-span oscillations: In this example, the diagram indicates bundle instability under winds from 12 to 17 m/s with peak-to-peak amplitudes of up to 220 mm, i.e. bundle spacing reduced by 220 mm. In this case, further considerations are required to reduce amplitudes of oscillations (e.g. reduce sub-span lengths and re-calculate amplitudes).
